Weekly Safety Topic – Watch for those flashy two-wheel warriors hitting the road

It’s that time of year again!!

As we see cyclist all over town donning their colorful cycling jerseys, it is an early indication the HHH is quickly approaching…. August 26th is the actual race, but the pre-race activities start much earlier than that week… As we all know from being around Wichita Falls in the summer, this is the time of the year we need to be extra cautious as those flashy two-wheel warriors hit the road.

Riders from all over the world converge in Wichita Falls sometimes a few weeks in advance to prepare for the largest single day bicycle ride in the nation. In 2016, participation fell off a bit with just under 12,000 people participating the weekend of events.
That was down from more than 13,000 registrants in 2015. However, race organizers say
if this years’ early registration is any indication, it could be one of the largest races yet!!

Did you know this is the 36th year?

The 2016 ride was the 35th year milestone of the Hotter’N Hell Hundred. Who would have thought an idea for Wichita Falls to celebrate its 1982 centennial, would still be going strong over 35 year later? The Wichita Falls Bicycle Club thought a bicycle ride; 100-miles in 100-degree heat to celebrate 100-years, would be a great way to celebrate. Based on the last few weeks, it appears we may be heading for another double-hundred ride. (100 miles in 100 degrees)

Ever heard of a SAG Wagon? Tony… I said SAG Wagon, not Jack wagon!!!

A SAG wagon is a truck, van or other support vehicle used during cycling events, designed to hold food and other equipment for participants, and to pick-up and carry any cyclists (and their bikes) who can no longer ride!!
If you have ever cramped up, hat a flat tire or needed emergency assistance on a bicycle ride, you know the importance of the SAG Wagon. We are very fortunate to have community members that graciously volunteer themselves, as well as their vehicles and trailer to support riders during the Hotter’N Hell Hundred weekend. The SAG Wagon provides constant assistance to riders by driving the route and aiding them in any way possible. The HHH team is seeking volunteers for the 2017 Support Team. If you are interested in volunteering for the Sag Wagon team contact Mark at: mmasman@sw.rr.com for more information.
